Heartburn is not an easy case that old ones experience. So what is heartburn? It is the pain which is like a burning sensation located behind the breastbone and the pain goes into the throat. This is one of the symptoms of heartburn. What is the cause of this heartburn? Specifically, it is because of acid reflux.
The other question is why acid reflux occurs? It is when the food allowed by the ring of muscle enters into the stomach – which is called the esophageal sphincter, or LES – stay when it shouldn’t. It will really cause pain when the throat is being burned by the acid coming from the stomach that creeps back to the esophagus. That is the cause of the heartburn sensation.
When you have heartburn, then you originally have acid reflux. Heartburn is something to cure because it is one of the effects of reflux that causes severe pain. True, there are several and variety of medication prescribed by the doctor, and there are lots of drug store to ease the pain of heartburn, but most of the medicines only ease the pain and not really curing where it originally occurred. Why is it chewing a gum is good remedy? The reason is because of the saliva stimulated by the chewing gum that makes more flow through of saliva into the gut that makes the acid diluted and washed away. The GERD symptoms will likely to be improved because of the clearance of acid.

This is the worst thing to trigger your acid reflux. If you are a smoker or alcohol drinker, then you are weakening your LES and making it easier to produce more acid that goes into your esophagus.
